The Morris Men of Little Egypt
Boxing Day 2007

maintaining Tradition and Still Going Ahead! despite Kim Howells

Tradition has it that Little Egypt's Boxing Day divides into 4 unequal parts:
  1. The Mustering at the Sign of the Squire
  2. The Dancing at the Sign of the Black Lion
  3. The Mumming at the Sign of the Cross of St George
  4. The Going Ahead at the Sign of the Cross-Dressing Morris

Boxing Day 2007 Index

"Going Ahead" is the ancient Morris tradition of enlivening sessions inside pubs, after the dance, by means of music, song and even indoor dances, such as "The Special" (from the Molly tradition) and the Bottle Dance.

A few years ago, the killjoys in government tried to deal the death-blow to this sort of occasion by the imposition of the new Licensing Act.
For some reason, despite their express intentions (read the Parliamentary debates), they reckoned without the Morris, and we're still here in 2007 to prove a point.

And so: back inside for more entertainment from the Bottle Dance to the Annual Guest Appearance of none other than Glemsford's own Dame Leerer Vynn.

Whale meet again

My people! Give me the Andrews sisters any day

As always, the Good-Dame had the place singing to the rafters and causing considerable amusement:

You only sing when you're winging I KNEW I caught him offguard. He really should be more careful

Following that was difficult, but as always, Little Egypt managed.
Our very own Graham "Simon" Dupree was on hand to conjure up the atmosphere of 1967 with his interpretation of "Kites".

Knowing that the ban on smoking would restrict matters somewhat, Little Egypt again seemed to circumnavigate a problem.

We can assure you that nothing in these pictures was against the law.

And all that I knew was the hole in my shoe which was letting in water ... I will fly my little yellow kite in your sky ...

Of course, if you want to know what it was like, you can open this link,
but don't say you haven't been warned.
Did I say nothing broke the law? ...

Follow that, as they say.

Well, why should we?

In the immortal words of the Bard of Glemsford,
it was another cr*p day with the Morris.

See what we mean?
