The Morris Men of Little Egypt
Boxing Day 2007

The Dance

Tradition has it that Little Egypt's Boxing Day divides into 4 unequal parts:
  1. The Mustering at the Sign of the Squire
  2. The Dancing at the Sign of the Black Lion
  3. The Mumming at the Sign of the Cross of St George
  4. The Going Ahead at the Sign of the Cross-Dressing Morris

To many, Dancing at the Black Lion is one of the highlights of the Morris Year, making a neat conclusion to the story that begins on May 1.

Bagman Brian reports that, at the Black Lion:
"... a large crowd was waiting in anticipation of a great lunchtime's entertainment.
I reckon my glasses guarantee anonymity I see the men with the hot ashphalt scored here too
We decided that we'd better try harder this year so after discussions about which should be the first dance the Squire called us to order for
Ring O' Bells, "only ever danced on Boxing Day".
Do try and keep in time lads Call that an 'at?
Other dances from the all new 2007 repertoire included
The Bluebells of Scotland, Vandals
I hate this tuneBe gentle with me
I hope our insurance is up to date
and
Sweet Jenny Jones,
It makes so much difference not getting gravel rash Remind me - which foot should we be on?
which included the added attraction this year of not one but two unicyclists.
What do you mean - you're not wearing protective clothing? More fool you.
Rounding off the set was
Fanny Frail
Are you ready girls? ... Once more, with feeling
which neatly led the dancers, musicians and crowd inside the pub for more refreshment.
Don't worry about that lot - they'll keep time every so often

... and then there was the Mumming.
